Weather Contingencies & Safety

What Happens if Weather Cancels Our Cruise Wedding Port?

Understanding the Captain's safety decisions, onboard lounge backups, and licensing shifts during bad weather.

If inclement weather or high seas prevent a cruise ship from docking at a scheduled wedding port, the ship's Captain and onboard wedding team will pivot the ceremony to a designated backup indoor lounge or chapel. While port cancellation can be disappointing, cruise lines have pre-arranged weather contingency plans to ensure a beautiful and seamless ceremony at sea.

Safety First: The Captain's Final Call

When you plan an outdoor destination wedding, weather is always the ultimate wildcard. In the cruise industry, safety is the absolute priority. If a storm, tropical depression, high swells, or high port winds prevent the ship from docking or safely tendering passengers ashore, the Captain will make the executive call to bypass the port.

While this decision is rare, it requires a swift, coordinated operational response. Cruise lines prepare backup plans for every wedding booked, ensuring the onboard crew can seamlessly execute your wedding ceremony while sailing at sea.

What to Expect During a Weather Pivot

Designated Shipboard Backup Venues

Every wedding package lists a primary shoreside location and an onboard backup venue. If the port is bypassed, your onboard coordinator will secure a private lounge, the ship's chapel, or a specialty restaurant. These backup spaces feature stunning panoramic ocean views, professional audio setups, and climate control, ensuring your guests remain comfortable regardless of the weather outside.

Automatic Refunds & Onboard Credits

Since you cannot reach the shoreside venue, all shoreside fees are credited back to your stateroom SeaPass account. This includes shoreside officiant fees, beach permit fees, ground transportation, and shoreside arch rentals. The cruise line will also adjust your reception packages and often provide complimentary amenities (such as specialty dining or champagne) to celebrate your onboard union.

The Shift in Marriage Licensing

If your original plan was a legally binding shoreside ceremony (e.g., in Cozumel under Mexican law) and the port is bypassed, moving the wedding onboard makes it a symbolic ceremony. To resolve this, you will exchange vows symbolic of your marriage, and we will coordinate a local civil courthouse ceremony upon your return home. However, on Bermuda-registered ships, the license can often be updated for a legal at-sea marriage if submitted early.
